No Stone Unturned

It was no mean feat to create this fetching five-bedroom family home. Extensive earthworks – thousands of cubic metres of soil had to be shifted – and retaining work were required at the outset. What’s more, the large, sloping, urban site is covered by multiple covenants and building restrictions. Yet the split-level dwelling does not feel like a compromise. In fact, it has it all; privacy, expansive views of the Kaimai range, a generous covered outdoor living area and fireplace, secluded courtyards and an open lawn area ideal for games of cricket. There are multiple play spaces indoors, too; several living areas, children’s playrooms and a large loft designed for years of entertainment as the family grows. It’s a necessarily practical home, where the beautifully-finished herringbone flooring and oak cabinetry are as hard-wearing as they are handsome. Resident grown-ups are particularly enamoured with the handcrafted hardwood trusses and lintels and Hinuera split stone cladding outside. They also appreciate the formal dining and lounging options and a custom-built oak bar with separate hot and sparkling water taps in this entertainment paradise. However, there is no doubt that family life is the number one priority here.
