About Us

In the beginning

Belco’s journey began with a single seed planted by Mike Bell, who, after completing his building apprenticeship, went out on his own as “Mike Bell Builder.” In 1996, Mike and Kathy transitioned the business into “Belco Homes,” initially operating from Omokoroa, with the company later relocating its office and yard to its current location at Plummers Point.

In 2013, Kerry Mear, a former Belco apprentice, joined the team as a Director/Project Manager. Over the years, Belco has successfully built many homes, ranging from small to large, as well as renovations and additions. With the heart of the company’s business being in constructing architecturally designed homes.

Today

From humble beginnings with just Mike and Kathy, we’ve grown into a thriving company with a talented team of project managers, foremen, carpenters, apprentices, a quantity surveyor, and dedicated office support. Their expertise and passion are the driving force behind our award-winning homes. We’re incredibly proud of our team and the exceptional quality they bring to every project.

Kathy Bell

Office Manager

A longtime Plummers Point resident, I’ve grown up just a stone’s throw from our office. My professional journey began in accounting, where I served as an Accountant Clerk and later as an Office Manager. This background equipped me well for transitioning to my role at Belco Homes, where I managed the office operations while juggling life with two active boys.

Over the years I’ve really enjoyed being part of the accounting processes that streamline our clients building journey. There’s a real sense of accomplishment in creating transparent processes that empower our clients to make informed decisions. Being part of creating beautiful homes and witnessing the joy of our homeowners is incredibly rewarding.

When I’m not at work, I love spending quality time with family and friends, and escaping to Waihi Beach to enjoy everything it has to offer. Whenever possible I love to recharge and explore New Zealand’s stunning countryside, from tramping, outrigger canoe paddling, 4WD camping holidays to cycle trail adventures. I can’t get enough of hanging out with friends and making memories in New Zealand’s great outdoors.

Belco Homes has been a huge part of my life. Starting my journey as an apprentice with Belco at the age of 17, I’ve dedicated over 20 years to the building industry. My path has taken me from Australia, where I founded my own construction company, back home to New Zealand to join Belco Homes as a Director in 2013. Belco Homes has allowed me to build such an amazing career. We’ve crafted some truly iconic homes within the Western Bay of Plenty. It’s incredibly rewarding when I meet people from all walks of life and mention my involvement with Belco Homes. The frequent response, ‘Oh really, you guys build amazing homes,’ fills me with pride and accomplishment. I also love the variety my role offers: from hands-on site work and mentoring our team to working together with clients and celebrating our industry awards. My three active kids keep me firmly grounded outside of work, and busy, with their involvement in sports and hobbies. A passionate rugby fan, I enjoy the game at all levels. I’m a social person who loves spending time with friends, whether it’s over a beer or out exploring New Zealand’s awesome scenery while fishing or hunting.

Gaye Adams

Office Administrator

Gaye joined Belco in August 2023, drawn by a long-standing interest in the construction industry. She has previously worked in administration across various industries, with her most recent role in retail, where she ran her own vintage homewares business.

For the past 14 years, Gaye and her builder husband have been renovating their villa near Katikati, where they live with their two teenagers. This extensive personal project has allowed them to creatively transform their relocated villa while creating their dream home on a budget.

Gaye’s fascination with homes and landscaping, combined with her professional background, has always pointed her towards a role in residential construction. She loves being part of the process of creating beautiful homes for clients, watching the journey unfold from the initial stages right through to the exciting moment when the final details come together.

At Belco, Gaye helps keep things running smoothly. She assists Kathy with administration and takes charge of health and safety and marketing — a role she particularly enjoys for its creative opportunities.
