Let there be light

This tight, elevated corner site delivered some notable construction challenges. More than 4m was sliced off the top of the property to create a building platform where delicate soil proved difficult in wet weather. Everything was carried by hand from the road, up the steep right-of-way that had to be kept clear at all times. Site storage was minimal and rubbish had to be removed daily. Yet the end result delivers absolute convenience and a relaxed lifestyle for the art-loving owners who wanted a sleek, low-maintenance home ideal for entertaining. Both the rendered plaster exterior and attractive copper-hued vertical Dualbord cladding are easy care. Flexible spaces mean the laundry doubles as a utility room and the third bedroom becomes an office. No-one feels hemmed in thanks to oodles of outdoor living areas and the sophisticated 27m mono-pitch roofline that enables a soaring raked living room ceiling. Abundant wall space showcases owner’s art, while a rendered Venetian plaster feature wall frames the fireplace. Natural light pours through custom skylights in the extra-width entrance and hall, as well as full height windows and doors (supported by discreet steel portals). A striking Plexiglass garage door delivers extra light to the garage work spaces.
